AvPlan 1.5.4

AvPlan 1.5.4 is now available via the Apple App Store. This release includes the following new features;

  • Direct to navigation
  • New course prediction display
  • Lock screen button
  • Approach timer
  • UTC clock
  • Imports flight plans in GPX format from Command Flight Planner and iVFR.net
Direct To navigation to a point in your current plan is enabled  by tapping and holding on a leg in the flight plan and selecting ‘Direct To’ from the menu which appears. (You will also notice a bunch of other new buttons here, to simplify other tasks). To track direct to any other point, tap the map near that point and tap ‘Direct To’ on the Nearest Items view. Then tap ‘+’ on the row corresponding to the waypoint.
To cancel direct to navigation and activate a leg in the current plan, tap and hold on the leg in the flight plan and select ‘Activate Leg’.
The course prediction display can be enabled by selecting the appropriate menu item on the En Route tab. This will then show the current course, with the location in 2, 5 an 10 minutes displayed as arc’s on the line. The arc’s are 10 degrees in length.
An allowance for approach fuel has been added, and taxi time changed to a taxi fuel allowance.
The updated user manual is available at www.avsoft.com.au/avplan/avplan-user-manual/
We are also excited to announce the impending availability of AvPlan for iPhone. The beta testing team are currently busy trying out all the functionality. This will be available in the coming weeks and will also enable support for wirelessly syncing flight plans between your devices.

Just in time for Christmas

Hi Folks

We are slowing down as the holiday season approaches, and putting the final touches on what will be the last AvPlan release of 2011. In this release we are adding;

  • Direct To navigation.
  • Course prediction pointer on the map
  • You will be able to import flight plans from Command Flight Planner and iVFR.net
  • Added a field for approach fuel allowance, and changed taxi time to just taxi fuel.
  • A button to lock the screen has been added
  • An approach timer has been added to the Terminal pane
  • A UTC clock has been added to the flight plan
In addition there are many small tweaks and improvements as suggested from the pilot community.

AvPlan 1.5.3

AvPlan 1.5.3 is now available via the Apple App Store. This release includes a bunch of new features;

  • Added Sunrise/Sunset calculations, communications details and winds aloft on the Terminal tab
  • Added top of climb, top of descent and PNR annotations on route. PNR is calculated on the return to origin.
  • User fixes can be deleted by tapping on the fix and selecting ‘Delete’ on the menu which appears.
  • New printing capability, located under ‘Flight Planning’. Select plan, weather and charts to be printed/emailed/sent to another app. Forecasts can now be printed.
  • Bulk import user waypoints from a CSV file. See below for the format.
  • Share and download aircraft type models via www.avsoft.com.au/avplan/aircraft-model-database . Aircraft models can now be copied.
  • METAR icons are colour coded for VFR/Low VFR/IFR/Low IFR (blue,green,yellow,red).
  • IFR routes are added using stored routes where specified via Airservices Australia.
  • Improvements to the way the ‘rubber banding’ of routes is handled. Tap and hold anywhere along a route, and when the blue ring appears, drag it to a point to insert a new leg in a route.
During the install the app will update, download and install new databases. This database update sets the app up for some exciting new features which will appear in 2012.
The METAR icons are colour coded as follows;
  • Blue (VFR). Visibility > 8km, Cloud > 3000ft.
  • Green (Marginal VFR). Vis > 5km, Cloud > 1000ft.
  • Yellow (IFR). Vis > 1600m, Cloud > 500ft.
  • Red (Low IFR). Vis < 1600m and Cloud < 500ft.
A CSV file can be imported from an email message into the app. The format of the file is as follows;
Ident, Name,Type,Frequency,Latitude,Longitude,Altitude,Magnetic Variation
(the Type and Frequency values are currently placeholders and will be silently ignored)
Also included are a bundle of bug fixes, performance and stability improvements.
As with all our releases since 1.5, if your trial period has expired, a new version will work for a number of days to give you the chance to see the new features in action.

AvPlan 1.5.2

AvPlan 1.5.1 is now available in the App Store. In this release we have added SIGMET and METAR overlays over the maps. The SIGMET overlay is still in prototype form – expect to see this being refined over the next release or so. To get the most from the SIGMET overlay, download an updated database, which includes some MET reporting points which were previously omitted.

METAR and SIGMET overlays

To assist with situation awareness we have added two new map  overlays in the upcoming 1.5.2 release;

The METAR overlays the METAR information from the last downloaded forecast over the map. The METAR can be viewed by tapping on the blue icon. The wind arrows conform to the standard BOM notation. If a SPECI is applicable, an exclamation mark icon will appear adjacent to the METAR icon.

The SIGMET overlays any SIGMET’s in the last downloaded forecast when there is position information encoded in that SIGMET as a sequence of points.

AvPlan 1.5.1

AvPlan 1.5.1 has been approved and is now available via the Apple App Store. AvPlan1.5.1 adds the following new features

  • Map legends are now available
  • SARTIME notifications can be edited or cancelled.
  • The weather icon changes if there is a SIGMET in the current forecast
In addition there are a number of changes to current functionality to improve usability
  • Aircraft types have been split from aircraft. The aircraft type database is now available under ‘Settings’
  • Most popup windows also dim when the display brightness is changes
  • The size of the brightness control has been increased
  • All popup windows will disappear when the original button is pressed
  • All downloaded data is checked for consistency in the background and a warning is issued if previously downloaded data is unavailable
  • The notepad colour has been changed to white.

November Data Update

The finishing touches are going on the November 2011 data update which is valid from 17 November. Expect to see AvPlan prompt you to download a new database in the coming days. Once the new database has downloaded and installed, the new ERSA, DAP and Maps can be downloaded from the ‘Data Downloads section’.

To download the new charts;

  1. Tap ‘Settings’
  2. Tap ‘Data Downloads’
  3. Select ‘NavData 1111’ as the database version
  4. Download the new ERSA, DAP and maps. Only new maps will be marked as ‘Download’. (The Mega WAC, WAC and PCA charts remain unchanged in this data cycle).

These will be saved, and will automatically become active at the correct time.

AvPlan 1.5

Apple have reviewed the latest AvPlan update (1.5) in less than 12 hours, and it is now available via the App Store.

AvPlan 1.5 adds the following new features;

  • Map rotation. Maps can be rotated to any orientation using two fingers to rotate the map. In addition the map can be locked north up, or track up (if there is an active leg in the flight plan)
  • Moving map mode. The aircraft is locked in the centre of the map. Maps cannot be panned, but they can be zoomed and rotated.

AvPlan 1.4.1

AvPlan 1.4.1 has been released and is now available in the Apple App Store.

In this release we have added the following new features;

  • Mega WAC with full Australia wide coverage
  • New aircraft default settings
  • New options for fuel tanks in aircraft models

The new Mega WAC is available if you download an updated navdata database. Open the app and tap ‘Settings’ then ‘Database Update’ then ‘Update’ to download an updated database. The download process will take around 5 minutes to complete. The Mega WAC will then be available to be viewed and saved for offline access. The map size is around 500 MB, so it will take some time to download. Other Mega charts will be appearing in the near future.

This release includes the ability to set default loading values (weights and fuel loads) on a per-aircraft basis. In addition default survival equipment can also be specified, again on a per aircraft basis. These settings can be changed by editing the aircraft details.

We have also added new option for fuel tanks where the moment arm changes depending on fuel load. These can be added from data in your aircraft flight manual. These settings can be changed in the Weight and Balance section of the aircraft type.

The aircraft models have also been altered to specify whether the aircraft is a helicopter or not. If a helicopter is specified then the ‘Select Nearest Waypoints’ window will show helicopter landing sites  (otherwise these will remain hidden). If you operate a helicopter you will need to check this setting, as it defaults to ‘No’.

As always, if you have any comments or suggestions please do not hesitate in contacting us at support at avsoft.com.au.

Thank you,

The AvSoft team.
