CASA Approval Update

On Friday, 30th of August we received our CASA approval under CAR 233 1(h). CASA actually processed our application far faster than expected, and the other hoop we need to pass through is an upgrade on insurance coverage required under our Airservices contract.

Once we obtain this coverage we can remove the disclaimer that AvPlan is ‘Not for use for in flight navigation’.

iPad’s in the cockpit

At the AOPA Safety Seminars which are held around the country we present on iPad’s and their use in the cockpit. The first half of the presentation is very product agnostic, and is useful material for anyone using an iPad or other device as an EFB. The later part of the presentation gets into the use of AvPlan as an EFB.

Visualise a subdivision

In AvPlan you can now easily visualise a forecast subdivision. Tap Planning, Winds to view the various forecast overview’s for your flight. Tap any text which is AAA/BBB/CCC etc and the forecast subdivision will be drawn on the current map.

AvPlan EFB 3.1.2

This morning we have released AvPlan 3.1.2. We have added the ability to enter and view waypoints in MGRS coordinates and a bunch of minor fixes and improvements. As usual this free update is available in the Apple App Store.

AvPlan EFB 3.1.1

Today we have released AvPlan EFB 3.1.1. In this release we have added the ability to have much more control over route selection when adding waypoints. AvPlan now gives you the choice to fly;

  • Direct
  • Via any IFR routes joining the two points
  • Via any Stored IFR routes joining the two points
  • Via the shortest IFR route joining the two points

In the past AvPlan made this determination itself, but now we hand control to you to choose the best routing to suit your operation.

AvPlan now includes the ability to tap on a forecast subdivision under Planning, Winds and the app will open the En Route pane and draw that subdivision on the map.  You can tap on any text with place names separated by ‘/’ or ‘-‘ and a line joining these points will be drawn on the current map.

We have also added the ability to print DAP/ERSA pages full page if desired, rather than the 2 pages per page compressed format. You can enable this under Settings, User Settings.

You will also notice new names against the waypoints on the map. The map now zooms and pans far faster than before. The SIGMET overlays have also changed to be less intrusive.

In addition we have fixed a number of issues that some where experiencing;

  • Printing multipage printouts
  • Issues with download timeouts
  • Issues when the BOM issue SIGMET’s in the wrong format
  • AvPlan now uses the cruise TAS for a leg that is all on descent

We are still progressing through the approval process so you can use AvPlan EFB as a replacement for paper maps, ERSA and DAP’s. It appears the CASA lawyers will be adding a bit of a delay as they can take a while to draft a single page letter with our approval number on it!

Reverse or Invert Flight Plan

Tap the edit button under the flight plan (first of the 5 buttons) to expose two rows of buttons under the flight plan. There are two buttons, one to invert the plan, and one to reverse the plan.

For example, you have a plan A-B-C
Reverse will change the plan to A-B-C-B-A (back to origin)
Invert will change the plan to C-B-A

Area Frequency

The current and next area frequency can be displayed on the Data Labels (Map Settings, Show Position). If you tap Map Settings, View Items, FIA Boundaries the FIA boundaries are plotted on the map. Double tap the region to display the airspace at that point, including the area frequency for that area.

Link AvPlan to Dropbox

AvPlan can now be linked to a dropbox account (or a shared dropbox account for your company documents). Go to the Text pane and scroll to the Dropbox section. Tap Link Account at the bottom to link to a dropbox account. It will create a directory named Apps/AvPlan EFB in the Dropbox account. PDF documents can then added to the folder and will appear in AvPlan.

Restricted Area Status

AvPlan 3.0 and above can display the current status of PRD areas on the map. Tap the map settings button and select View Items, Active Airspace. Active PRD areas will be highlighted on the map. As these become active and de-active they will appear/disappear.

Double tap the area to display active times, NOTAM etc.

New Download Page

In AvPlan EFB there is a new map-based download page. Different map types can be selected at the top of the page and individual charts or areas downloaded by tapping on the region on the map.

The regions are colour coded as follows;

  • Dark green – region fully downloaded
  • Light green – region fully downloaded, but set to expire
  • Yellow – region currently downloading
  • Orange – region partially downloaded and not currently downloading
  • Clear – region not downloaded
When new data is available for regions you have previously downloaded, or data has been partially downloaded (the region is orange) then the ‘Update’ button will be red. Tap the Update button and then the updated (or the remainder of the partially downloaded area) will start to download.
To delete a region, tap on it and select delete. That will delete all data for that area immediately.
Tapping on a region and selecting ‘Leave to expire’ leaves the data there for use, but when the data expires it will not be downloaded again, and will be deleted at that time.
AvPlan EFB 3.1 now includes the ability to send files as they download to other devices on your local network. You will also notice the button labelled ‘Devices’ down on  the bottom of the Download page. Tap on that and select nearby devices. When this device downloads a new file it will then be sent to those other devices. The other devices need to be on the Download page for them to be visible, and to receive downloads.
